Square Pilots Real-Time Bitcoin Payments in Vegas, Plans Full Availability To Customers in 2026

Square, the financial technology company founded by Jack Dorsey, is significantly expanding its bitcoin payment capabilities. At the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, Square is conducting a three-day pilot program allowing attendees to make purchases using bitcoin via a barcode scanning system. This innovative approach leverages the Lightning Network for near real-time settlement of transactions, addressing a key challenge in bitcoin’s widespread adoption – transaction speed.

The process is streamlined for both merchants and consumers. Attendees simply scan a barcode with their mobile device, initiating a bitcoin payment. Square’s system then automatically calculates and applies the current exchange rate, providing immediate confirmation of the transaction. This eliminates the delays and uncertainties often associated with traditional bitcoin payments, paving the way for a more seamless and user-friendly experience.

Square’s initiative is a significant step toward broader bitcoin adoption, demonstrating the practicality and efficiency of integrating bitcoin into everyday commerce. The company is actively working to overcome the technical and regulatory hurdles that have hindered wider bitcoin usage. This pilot program serves as a crucial test case, gathering valuable data on user experience and transaction efficiency, which will inform future development and deployment strategies.

Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block (XYZ), Square’s parent company, emphasized the company’s commitment to a more accessible and equitable financial system. Suter stated, “We believe in an open, decentralized, fair, fast, and low-cost money system for everyone, and that’s exactly what we want to bring to Square sellers.” This statement underscores Square’s long-term vision of integrating bitcoin into its core services, potentially revolutionizing payment processing for businesses.

The success of this pilot program will determine the timeline for wider rollout. Square aims to make the bitcoin barcode payment system available to a broader audience later this year, with a projected full customer rollout by 2026, subject to regulatory approval. This ambitious goal reflects Square’s dedication to fostering innovation in the digital payment landscape and pushing the boundaries of bitcoin’s practical applications.
