Has Bitcoin Peaked? BlackRock BTC Spot ETF Traders Lose Appetite for Upside
Bitcoin’s price has largely stagnated since reaching record highs above $110,000 last week, signaling a potential shift in market sentiment. This sideways movement is accompanied by a decline in bullish sentiment among traders of options linked to BlackRock’s anticipated spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). Analysis of market data reveals a significant change in investor behavior.
One key indicator, the one-year put-call skew for Bitcoin (IBIT) options, provides insights into market volatility and trader expectations. This metric measures the relative pricing of put options (offering downside protection) versus call options (representing bullish bets). A negative skew indicates a bullish bias, while a positive skew suggests fear of price declines.
Recently, the IBIT one-year skew has rebounded from a four-month low of -3.8 to near zero. This signifies a notable reduction in bullish bets made through options. Traders are no longer aggressively pursuing upside potential via options contracts, suggesting a potential shift towards a more cautious, or even bearish, outlook. The market may be anticipating a price correction.
Further evidence supporting this shift comes from Deribit-listed options. Data shows a weakening in the short-term call skew. Specifically, call options expiring within the next two weeks are now trading at parity with put options. This balance between bullish and bearish bets contrasts sharply with previous periods of strong bullish momentum.
The convergence of these indicators points to a potential period of consolidation or even a price pullback. The near-term price range of $95,000 to $105,000 is currently in focus, with a significant $10 billion Bitcoin options expiry looming on the horizon. This upcoming expiry could further influence market dynamics and price movements in the coming days and weeks. The overall picture suggests a cooling of speculative fervor and a potential shift toward a more balanced, less bullish market sentiment.
