Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht to Bitcoiners: ‘Freedom is Worth the Struggle’
Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road, delivered a keynote address at Bitcoin 2025, marking his first public appearance since his January release from prison. His speech emphasized three core principles: freedom, decentralization, and unity, crucial for the crypto community’s continued success.
Ulbricht illustrated these principles with an anecdote about wasps’ nests. The wasps, though individually strong due to their freedom and decentralized nature (spread across seven nests), were ultimately weak because of their lack of unity. Their failure to react collectively when one nest was attacked highlighted the importance of unified action. He drew a parallel to the crypto community, stressing the need for collective strength against external threats.
Ulbricht’s release, following a 12-year prison sentence for operating the Silk Road, was attributed to the crypto community’s advocacy efforts. He expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging their role in securing his freedom. He described the feeling of regaining freedom as profoundly positive, contrasting sharply with the despair of imprisonment.

He noted the significant technological advancements since his incarceration, citing the emergence of numerous cryptocurrencies, blockchains, DeFi, Web3, and AI as examples of the rapidly evolving landscape.
Ulbricht’s prison experiences further reinforced his message. He observed that prison authorities preferred inmates to be divided, showing respect only when prisoners presented a united front. He warned the crypto community against division, emphasizing that those who oppose freedom and decentralization thrive on discord. He concluded by urging the community to remain unified in their pursuit of freedom and decentralization, believing that a collective approach is essential for securing the future of the crypto space.
