Consensys Acquires Web3Auth to Reinvent MetaMask Onboarding

Consensys, the creator of the popular MetaMask wallet, has acquired Web3Auth, a provider of wallet infrastructure. This acquisition aims to enhance MetaMask’s user experience and developer accessibility. While financial details remain undisclosed, the integration of Web3Auth’s technology is expected to significantly improve MetaMask’s onboarding process and address a critical security challenge: seed phrase management.

Consensys’ internal data reveals that a concerning 35% of MetaMask users fail to back up their seed phrases, leading to potential permanent loss of funds. Web3Auth’s solution offers login and recovery tools mirroring the user-friendly experience of Web2 applications. This technology, already integrated into approximately 8,200 decentralized applications (dApps), will provide MetaMask users with alternative wallet access methods, reducing reliance on seed phrases. This move aligns with the industry’s growing focus on “account abstraction,” aiming to bring the ease of use and security features of traditional apps to the cryptocurrency space.

Joseph Lubin, Consensys’ CEO and Ethereum co-founder, highlighted the acquisition’s importance in strengthening MetaMask’s capabilities. He emphasized the vision of seamless integration with empowering features, including frictionless onboarding, customizable interfaces, extensive ecosystem connectivity, configurable security options, and robust protection in high-security scenarios.

The acquisition also benefits developers within the MetaMask ecosystem. Web3Auth’s embedded software development kits (SDKs) will simplify the development process, providing more flexible tools for integrating blockchain technology into consumer applications.

Dan Finlay, MetaMask’s co-founder, envisions a future where embedded wallets enable almost invisible blockchain integrations, minimizing user interaction. The combined strengths of Consensys and Web3Auth aim to create a decentralized web that remains largely invisible yet readily accessible when users need to engage with its capabilities. This acquisition signifies a significant step toward enhancing user security and simplifying the overall Web3 experience.
