Top 50 Women in Web3 & AI—Methodology
CoinDesk’s inaugural “Top Women in Web3 & AI” list highlights the convergence of two transformative technological revolutions: blockchain’s decentralized promise and AI’s potential to revolutionize work, creation, and global development. While seemingly disparate, these fields share a crucial element: reshaping the digital future’s infrastructure. Their intersection is not coincidental; AI’s growing computational needs and data demands align with blockchain’s search for applications beyond cryptocurrencies. This convergence is evident in areas such as data verification, distributed computing, and digital identity.
Major AI companies are exploring blockchain solutions for data provenance, while crypto projects leverage AI for tasks ranging from fraud detection to algorithmic trading. A new Web3 field, decentralized artificial intelligence (deAI), utilizes the computational power of blockchain audits to train competitive AI models.
The technology industry’s gender gap is significant in emerging fields like blockchain and AI. This list counters this underrepresentation by showcasing 50 influential women who are not merely participants, but authors of this technological narrative. They are building protocols and platforms, leading major startups, and shaping global governance frameworks, overcoming systemic challenges with creativity, empathy, and rigor.
AI and blockchain are complementary technologies: AI interprets and predicts, while blockchain verifies and preserves. AI relies on probabilistic reasoning, while blockchain utilizes cryptographic certainty. Their combined potential offers a blueprint for a future that is both adaptable and accountable, generative and just.
The list’s creation involved a rigorous and unbiased selection process. Over 300 nominations from diverse geographic regions were received through public outreach and expert networks. After an initial screening, a panel of five judges—Julia Bonafede, Olivia Bolec, Sarah Idahosa, Saruul Krause-Jentsch, and Amélie M.—evaluated 100 semifinalists, focusing on innovation, relevance, and influence. The CoinDesk editorial board made the final selection of 50 leaders, recognizing the diverse expertise needed in developing these technologies, from product development and business strategy to regulatory compliance and ethical considerations. As Web3 and AI transition from experimental to mainstream adoption, these diverse perspectives become increasingly critical.
