Tether Buys $82M Stake in Gold-Focused Investment Company Elemental Altus
Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, USDT, has significantly diversified its holdings by acquiring a substantial stake in Elemental Altus (ELE), a publicly traded precious metals investment company. This strategic move, valued at C$121.6 million ($89.2 million), represents a one-third ownership in Elemental Altus and marks a key step in Tether’s broader plan to bolster the backing of its USDT stablecoin.
The acquisition, announced Tuesday, involved the purchase of 78,421,780 common shares from La Mancha Investments, a Luxembourg-based mining investment firm. This investment immediately impacted Elemental Altus’s share price, causing a near 23% surge to C$1.77 ($1.30) following the announcement. While the price experienced a slight correction, closing at C$1.53 on Wednesday, it still reflected a 6.25% increase compared to the pre-investment price.
Tether’s rationale behind this investment is multifaceted. CEO Paolo Ardoino highlighted the investment’s alignment with Tether’s “confidence in the fundamentals of gold and its critical role in financial markets.” The company specifically cited Elemental Altus’s royalty model, which offers diversified exposure to global gold production, as strategically fitting with their vision for Tether Gold and the development of future commodity-backed digital asset infrastructure.
This acquisition underscores Tether’s “dual pillar strategy,” which involves a significant commitment to both gold and Bitcoin. The company currently holds over 100,000 BTC, valued at approximately $10.7 billion, demonstrating a balanced approach to backing its stablecoin.
This strategic shift towards tangible assets, particularly precious metals, is anticipated to be a significant factor in Tether’s efforts to comply with upcoming U.S. regulations on stablecoins. These regulations are expected to impose stricter requirements on the assets backing stablecoins, potentially necessitating diversification to mitigate risk and ensure compliance. This proactive measure by Tether suggests a forward-thinking approach to navigating the evolving regulatory landscape of the cryptocurrency market. The investment is a clear indication of Tether’s commitment to strengthening the stability and trustworthiness of its USDT stablecoin.
