Spain’s BBVA Is Advising Clients to Invest Up to 7% of Portfolio in BTC, ETH: Reuters
BBVA, a prominent Spanish financial institution, is actively encouraging its high-net-worth clients to incorporate cryptocurrencies into their investment strategies. This marks a significant shift in the bank’s approach to digital assets and represents a growing trend among major financial players toward greater acceptance of cryptocurrency investments.
According to Philippe Meyer, BBVA’s head of digital and blockchain solutions, the bank began offering cryptocurrency investment advice to its wealth management clients as early as September 2024. Speaking at the DigiAssets conference in London, Meyer revealed that the bank recommends allocating 3% to 7% of a client’s portfolio to cryptocurrencies, with the higher percentage reserved for investors with a higher risk tolerance.
Currently, BBVA’s cryptocurrency investment guidance focuses primarily on Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), two of the most established and widely recognized cryptocurrencies. However, Meyer indicated that the bank intends to broaden its recommendations to include other cryptocurrencies later this year. This expansion will likely reflect BBVA’s ongoing assessment of the cryptocurrency market and its commitment to providing clients with diversified investment options.
This proactive stance by BBVA stands in contrast to the more cautious approach many financial institutions adopted in previous years. The bank’s willingness to not only tolerate but actively promote cryptocurrency investment among its wealth clients underscores the evolving perception of cryptocurrencies within the traditional finance sector. While acknowledging the inherent risks associated with cryptocurrency investments, BBVA’s strategy reflects a growing confidence in the long-term potential of this asset class. The bank’s decision to provide concrete investment guidance, specifying recommended allocation percentages, demonstrates a level of sophistication and commitment rarely seen in previous institutional approaches to crypto. This move by BBVA will likely encourage other major financial institutions to reassess their strategies and potentially follow suit, further accelerating the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies. The development is significant not just for BBVA’s clients but also for the broader cryptocurrency market, signaling a potential turning point in its integration into mainstream finance.
