SoFi to Launch Blockchain Remittances With Stablecoins as Crypto Returns to Platform

SoFi, a prominent U.S.-based fintech platform, announced a significant expansion into the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. This strategic move involves the introduction of international remittances leveraging blockchain technology and stablecoins, alongside the relaunch of its cryptocurrency trading services.

The new remittance service will enable users to send U.S. dollars and select stablecoins internationally via established blockchain networks. This innovative approach promises faster and cheaper transactions compared to traditional methods like wire transfers. Funds will be converted into local currencies upon arrival and deposited directly into recipients’ accounts, offering 24/7 availability.

Simultaneously, SoFi will reintroduce its crypto trading platform, allowing users to buy, sell, and hold major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). This re-entry into the crypto market follows a period of suspension in 2023, a decision attributed to navigating a stricter regulatory environment. The company’s renewed confidence stems from recent guidance from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which permits nationally chartered banks to offer crypto custody and stablecoin services.

SoFi’s strategic vision extends beyond basic trading. Future plans include the integration of staking services, enabling users to earn rewards by participating in blockchain network consensus mechanisms. The platform also intends to offer crypto-backed lending, providing users with access to credit lines secured by their digital assets. Furthermore, SoFi aims to leverage its Galileo platform to provide blockchain infrastructure solutions to third-party clients.

CEO Anthony Noto emphasized the transformative potential of crypto, digital assets, and blockchain technology within the financial services industry. He highlighted SoFi’s commitment to empowering users with greater choice and control over their finances, whether through investments, international money transfers, or long-term financial planning. This comprehensive approach positions SoFi as a major player in the evolving landscape of financial technology, integrating cutting-edge blockchain solutions into its core offerings. The company’s renewed focus on crypto reflects a broader industry trend towards embracing digital assets within a more clearly defined regulatory framework.
