Kalshi Joins Polymarket in Unicorn Club With Latest Fundraise: Report

The prediction market landscape is heating up, with two major players, Kalshi and Polymarket, making significant moves. Kalshi, a federally regulated platform, has secured over $100 million in funding, achieving a $1 billion valuation. This news follows closely on the heels of reports that Polymarket is also raising a substantial $200 million at a similar valuation, spearheaded by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund.

While both platforms operate in the prediction market space, a comparison of their performance reveals interesting differences. Data from Kalshi’s publicly available API, curated by Polymarket Analytics (an independent entity), indicates that Kalshi boasts approximately $113 million in current active trading volume across all its open markets. In contrast, Polymarket’s active trading volume is significantly higher, nearing $600 million. This disparity highlights a key difference in market scale and overall activity.

Although Kalshi currently hosts a greater number of active markets than Polymarket, Polymarket maintains a lead in open interest. Open interest is a crucial metric signifying the liquidity and confidence of traders within the prediction market. A higher open interest suggests a more robust and liquid market. Further analysis reveals a considerable difference in active trader numbers. A Dune dashboard shows Polymarket has approximately 186,000 active traders, while Kalshi’s active trader count is not publicly available for direct comparison.

Paradigm, a prominent crypto-focused venture capital firm, led Kalshi’s latest funding round. This investment underscores the growing interest in regulated prediction markets within the cryptocurrency investment community. Paradigm’s recent involvement in other projects, such as the Series A funding for GTE, a decentralized exchange aiming to compete with HyperLiquid, further highlights their strategic focus on the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. Interestingly, Donald Trump Jr.’s appointment as a senior advisor to Kalshi earlier this year adds a unique dimension to the platform’s profile. The competitive landscape of prediction markets is dynamic, with both Kalshi and Polymarket poised for substantial growth and evolution in the coming months and years.
