Spot DOGE ETF Appears Nearer as Bitwise Amends Filing
The possibility of a spot Dogecoin ETF is gaining traction, fueled by recent regulatory filings. Bitwise Asset Management, a prominent ETF issuer, has amended its S-1 filings for both a Dogecoin ETF and an Aptos ETF. This amendment, according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Eric Balchunas, signals positive engagement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and aligns with the recent approval trend for other spot cryptocurrency ETFs.
A key development within Bitwise’s amended filing is the inclusion of in-kind redemptions and creations. This mechanism allows broker-dealers to directly exchange ETF shares for Dogecoin (DOGE) tokens, and vice versa, eliminating the need for a cash intermediary. This is a significant improvement over the current process for U.S.-based crypto ETFs, which mandates a cash-based exchange, triggering a taxable event each time shares are bought or redeemed. Balchunas suggests this in-kind feature is likely to become standard practice across all spot cryptocurrency ETFs.
The implications of this change are considerable. The current cash-based exchange process adds complexity and cost, impacting both ETF efficiency and investor returns. In-kind redemptions and creations promise streamlined operations and potentially lower fees, enhancing the appeal of Dogecoin and other crypto ETFs.
While the filing’s positive implications have not yet yielded a substantial price surge, the move underscores the increasing momentum behind Dogecoin’s entry into the traditional financial market via ETF vehicles. DOGE is currently trading at approximately $0.16, down about 2% in the last 24 hours. This recent price movement, however, does not necessarily reflect the long-term potential impact of ETF approval.
It’s worth noting that Bitwise isn’t alone in pursuing a Dogecoin ETF. 21Shares has also filed for a similar product, and Grayscale has filed for a Dogecoin trust, albeit with a higher 2.5% fee. The competitive landscape suggests that approval of a Dogecoin ETF could lead to increased choices for investors, further driving market activity and price discovery. The developments surrounding the Bitwise filing highlight a potentially transformative moment for Dogecoin’s accessibility within the regulated investment sphere.
