Coinbase Sets U.S. Perpetual-Style Futures Launch as CEO Says Firm Is Buying Bitcoin Weekly
Coinbase’s Entry into the US Futures Market: A Regulated Approach
Coinbase, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, is set to launch perpetual-style futures contracts in the United States on July 21st. This move marks a significant step for the regulated crypto market, as Coinbase will be among the first to offer this globally popular product domestically. Initially available for Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH), these contracts will trade on the Coinbase Derivatives Exchange, a platform regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Unlike the unregulated perpetual swaps prevalent in offshore markets, Coinbase’s instruments are structured as long-dated futures with a five-year expiration. This design mitigates some of the risks associated with perpetual contracts. To mimic the price dynamics of perpetual swaps, the contracts incorporate a funding rate mechanism that accrues hourly and settles twice daily. Trading will operate 24/7, with settlements handled through regulated clearing processes, ensuring transparency and compliance.
Coinbase’s commitment to Bitcoin extends beyond its new futures offering. CEO Brian Armstrong recently confirmed the company’s ongoing accumulation of Bitcoin as a long-term investment strategy. He publicly stated, “We’re buying more bitcoin every week. Long Bitcoin,” reinforcing the company’s bullish stance on the cryptocurrency. This announcement follows the revelation by Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas during the Q1 2025 earnings call that the firm had purchased $150 million in crypto assets, primarily Bitcoin.
Currently, Coinbase holds approximately 9,257 BTC, valued at nearly $1 billion, placing it among the top ten publicly listed holders of Bitcoin, according to BitcoinTreasuries.net. This significant holding underscores Coinbase’s confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term potential and its strategic approach to integrating the asset into its business model. The launch of regulated perpetual futures contracts, coupled with Coinbase’s consistent Bitcoin accumulation, signals a significant development in the maturation and regulation of the US cryptocurrency market. The company’s actions position it as a leader in providing compliant and sophisticated trading options for institutional and individual investors alike. This strategic move is expected to boost Coinbase’s market position and further solidify its reputation as a trusted player within the crypto space.
