BNB Hovers Above $648 as Maxwell Hard Fork Upgrade Set to Double Block Production Speed
BNB, the native token of the BNB Chain, exhibited price resilience on Sunday, trading within a narrow range amidst low volatility. This stability precedes a significant infrastructure upgrade, the Maxwell hard fork, scheduled for June 30th. The upgrade promises substantial performance enhancements for the BNB Smart Chain (BSC) mainnet.
The Maxwell hard fork aims to cut block times from 1.5 seconds to 0.75 seconds, effectively doubling the chain’s throughput. This builds upon previous improvements like the Lorentz fork, which already reduced block times from 3 seconds and improved network stability. Maxwell’s sub-second block speeds position BSC to compete more effectively with high-speed blockchains such as Solana.
Three protocol improvement proposals (BEP-524, BEP-563, and BEP-564) underpin the upgrade. These proposals overhaul validator coordination and consensus mechanics. Key changes include extending validator block proposal turns (from 8 to 16 blocks) and lengthening the epoch length (from 500 to 1000 blocks). These adjustments are designed to enhance stability, even under increased network load. To mitigate potential congestion and excessive state growth, the per-block gas limit will be reduced by half, from 70 million to 35 million. Further improvements target faster block propagation among validators (within 400 milliseconds) and improved range synchronization for lagging nodes.
Named after the physicist James Clerk Maxwell, the upgrade prioritizes a balance between speed and stability. This is intended to improve BNB Chain’s position within the DeFi, GameFi, and enterprise blockchain sectors. By ensuring more responsive block finality and smoother validator participation, the Maxwell hard fork is expected to boost future adoption and attract more developers to the ecosystem.
Recent price action showed BNB trading between $646.29 and $650.25, a 0.61% gain over the observed period. Key support was found at $647.11, and resistance at $651.30. Volume spikes confirmed sustained buyer interest above $648. While briefly touching a session high of $651.07, the price ultimately closed below the $651 resistance level. The overall price movement reflected a cautious optimism ahead of the upcoming hard fork.
