Italian Banking Group Banca Sella Pilots Stablecoin Custody With Fireblocks: Bloomberg
Banca Sella, a pioneering Italian banking group renowned for its technological innovation, is conducting an internal pilot program allowing a select group of employees to hold cryptocurrencies, including stablecoins. This initiative leverages Fireblocks’ custody software and is scheduled to conclude by the end of the summer. Following the trial period, Banca Sella’s executive team will assess the program’s success and determine whether to extend crypto custody services to its extensive customer base of 1.4 million, who currently entrust the bank with over €66 billion ($77.5 billion) in assets.
Importantly, this trial focuses solely on custody solutions; trading of volatile cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is not currently part of Banca Sella’s plans. This strategic approach reflects a cautious yet progressive stance towards the burgeoning cryptocurrency market. The bank’s decision to explore crypto custody is significantly influenced by the increasing regulatory clarity within the European Union, which is encouraging greater banking sector involvement in the crypto space.
Banca Sella’s initiative is not an isolated case. Several other European banks are actively engaging with cryptocurrencies. Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest bank, exemplifies this trend by establishing a spot Bitcoin desk earlier this year, accompanied by a €1 million investment in the cryptocurrency. UniCredit, another major Italian bank, is developing a capital-protected note linked to BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF (IBIT), highlighting the growing interest in Bitcoin-related investment products within the traditional finance sector. Furthermore, Société Générale, a prominent French banking institution, is expanding its stablecoin offerings by launching a dollar-backed stablecoin, following the successful introduction of its euro-backed stablecoin two years prior. These developments collectively indicate a broader shift within the European banking landscape, characterized by a cautious yet increasing embrace of cryptocurrencies and related technologies. The actions of these leading institutions suggest a growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies as a viable asset class within the traditional financial ecosystem. This evolution is further spurred by the increasing regulatory clarity and the potential for innovative financial products in the cryptocurrency market.
