Bitcoin Miner Hut 8 Jumps 15%, Leading Sector Higher After Inking 5-Year Energy Supply Deal

Hut 8 (HUT), a Miami-based bitcoin miner, has secured a significant long-term energy supply agreement. This five-year contract with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) guarantees a stable revenue stream for the company’s substantial power generation capacity. The agreement encompasses 310 megawatts of natural gas-fueled generation, distributed across four plants located in Iroquois Falls, Kingston, Kapuskasing, and North Bay, Ontario. These plants are assets of Far North, a joint venture between Hut 8 and Macquarie Equipment Finance.

The contract’s financial terms are favorable to Hut 8. Beginning in May 2026, the plants will generate an average revenue of CAD $530 (approximately $388.5 USD) per megawatt-business day in the initial year. Subsequent years will see partial inflation indexation, ensuring the contract’s value keeps pace with rising energy costs. The income is secured through a government-backed agency with a strong AA3 credit rating, providing a high degree of financial certainty.

This development underscores the growing importance of reliable energy sources for bitcoin mining operations. Ontario’s projected electricity demand increase of 75% by 2050, with a potential shortfall of up to 5.8 gigawatts by 2030, highlights the strategic value of Hut 8’s long-term energy contract. The agreement effectively mitigates the risk of fluctuating energy prices and secures a critical input for Hut 8’s bitcoin mining activities.

The announcement has significantly impacted Hut 8’s stock price, with shares rising over 15%. This positive market reaction has also boosted other publicly traded bitcoin miners, including Cleanspark (CLSK), MARA Holdings (MARA), and Riot Platforms (RIOT), which experienced gains of slightly less than 10%. The positive sentiment surrounding Hut 8’s energy deal underscores investor confidence in the company’s strategic planning and financial stability.

Adding to the positive momentum, American Bitcoin Corp, a company 80% owned by Hut 8 and backed by the Trump family, recently completed a $220 million fundraising round. This funding round, which included approximately $10 million in bitcoin, further strengthens the financial position of Hut 8 and its affiliated entities. The combination of the long-term energy contract and successful fundraising demonstrates Hut 8’s strong financial position and strategic foresight within the volatile cryptocurrency mining industry.
