Asia Morning Briefing: SOL up 4% as Analysts Say Staking ETF (SSK) Has Strong Launch
Asia Morning Briefing: Market Highlights
The launch of the REX-Osprey Solana + Staking ETF (SSK), the first U.S.-listed crypto staking ETF, saw impressive initial volume, exceeding expectations compared to recent Solana and XRP futures ETFs. Trading volume reached $33 million on its first day, with Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas deeming it a successful launch. This ETF provides investors with indirect access to Solana’s staking rewards, bypassing the technical complexities involved. SOL’s price reacted positively, rising approximately 4% to trade above $150. The SEC’s May ruling that crypto staking doesn’t violate securities laws paved the way for such products. While no ETH staking ETF currently exists in the U.S., 3iQ offers one on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and Hong Kong’s market already offers ETH staking ETFs.
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) is now generating more annual revenue than its flagship S&P 500 ETF (IVV), a testament to the growing institutional interest in crypto. Despite a significantly smaller asset under management ($75 billion vs. $624 billion), IBIT’s higher fee (0.25% vs. 0.03%) results in higher absolute revenue. This highlights the premium investors are willing to pay for regulated Bitcoin exposure, signifying the rapid institutional adoption of crypto. The preference for BlackRock’s established brand in the crypto space also contributes to this premium.
Market movements show significant gains for Bitcoin (BTC), surging 3.6% to surpass $109,000, fueled by increased volume and improving global sentiment following the US-Vietnam trade deal. Ethereum (ETH) also experienced a substantial rise of 8.6%, reaching $2,608, driven by institutional interest and positive market momentum. Gold price forecasts were raised by HSBC to $3,215 and $3,125 per ounce for 2025 and 2026 respectively, citing geopolitical risks and investor demand. The Nikkei 225 showed a slight decrease of 0.15%, while the S&P 500 saw a 0.47% increase.
Other notable crypto news includes Ripple’s application for a federal bank trust charter, resulting in a 3% jump in XRP, and Celsius gaining approval to pursue a $4.3 billion lawsuit against Tether.
