Bitcoin, Dogecoin, XRP Rise as Bessent Hints at Trade Deals Before Liberation Day Tariff Deadline

Positive sentiment in the cryptocurrency market surged Sunday morning following comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding upcoming trade deals. Bessent hinted at the imminent finalization of several agreements before the July 9th Liberation Day tariff deadline, impacting major cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, experienced a significant increase, exceeding $109,000 briefly, representing a gain of over 1%. Other prominent cryptocurrencies also saw substantial gains. XRP and Solana’s SOL token each rose over 2%, while the meme token Dogecoin (DOGE) climbed by 3%, according to CoinDesk. Ethereum’s ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, increased by 1.5%, reaching $2,550.

Bessent’s statements, made during a CNN interview, emphasized the July 9th deadline for negotiations. He clarified that failure to reach agreements by this date would result in the reinstatement of higher tariffs, initially announced on April 2nd, commencing August 1st. He described the situation as offering trading partners a choice: expedite negotiations or face a return to the previously announced higher tariff levels. Some countries, Bessent noted, were exhibiting “foot-dragging” in the negotiation process.

President Trump’s administration has prioritized bolstering the U.S. economy through the imposition of tariffs on imported goods. This strategy aims to rebalance trade relations and reduce the U.S. trade deficit. The April 2nd announcement of sweeping tariffs, ranging from a 10% base tax to as high as 50% on certain countries, triggered a significant sell-off in financial markets. This included a sharp decline in Bitcoin, which plummeted to $75,000. The ensuing market panic prompted a 90-day pause in tariff implementation.

Subsequently, a resurgence of “U.S. exceptionalism” has been observed in financial markets, with major U.S. equity indices reaching record highs. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have outperformed their global counterparts, mirroring Bitcoin’s rally above $100,000. Bessent’s optimistic outlook on trade deals appears to have further fueled this positive momentum in both traditional and cryptocurrency markets.
