Drake Compares Fake Friends to Bitcoin’s Volatility: ‘Down This Week, Up Next’

Drake’s latest musical release, “What Did I Miss,” incorporates bitcoin into its lyrical narrative, highlighting the cryptocurrency’s price volatility as a metaphor for unreliable friendships. This isn’t Drake’s first foray into the crypto world; he’s become a prominent figure within the celebrity crypto community. His significant social media presence, boasting over 146 million Instagram followers at the time of one notable post, amplified his endorsement of bitcoin when he shared a clip of Michael Saylor predicting bitcoin’s dominance over gold.

Drake’s engagement with crypto extends beyond social media endorsements. He’s made substantial bitcoin investments, notably exceeding $1 million in losing bets on sports teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Edmonton Oilers, as well as other ventures into UFC fights and Formula One racing. This pattern of losses has spawned the internet meme “Drake Curse,” ironically associating his support with subsequent defeats. Drake acknowledged these losses, self-deprecatingly labeling himself a “flawed sports bettor.”

However, his crypto involvement surpasses mere high-stakes gambling. Drake’s reported $100 million annual partnership with the crypto gambling platform Stake underscores his significant financial commitment to the industry. Beyond the gambling aspect, he has invested in crypto firms such as MoonPay and publicly showcased hardware wallets on social media, demonstrating a broader interest in crypto assets and security.

Interestingly, Drake’s lyrical comparison of bitcoin’s volatility to unreliable relationships coincides with a period of relative calm in the market. The Deribit Bitcoin Volatility Index (DVOL) has reached a near two-year low of 38, suggesting a potential lull before significant price fluctuations. This juxtaposition—Drake’s lyrical reference to bitcoin’s volatility and the current low DVOL—provides a compelling contrast between artistic expression and market realities. The lyrics, therefore, can be interpreted not only as a commentary on relationships but also as a reflection of the inherently unpredictable nature of the cryptocurrency market.
