Bitcoin Slips Below $108K, Erases Weekend Gains as Trump Ramps Up Tariffs
Bitcoin’s modest weekend rally reversed on Monday, as President Trump’s renewed focus on tariff policies dampened market sentiment. The price of BTC dipped below $108,000 during the U.S. afternoon, marking a 0.8% decrease over the past 24 hours. This decline was mirrored by other major cryptocurrencies, with Ethereum’s ETH experiencing a 0.6% drop. Smaller cryptocurrencies, including Solana (SOL), Dogecoin (DOGE), and Sui (SUI), saw declines ranging from 1% to 2%. XRP, however, bucked the trend, showing a gain of over 2%.
The primary catalyst for the downturn was President Trump’s escalation of tariff threats. Despite delaying his self-imposed July 9th trade deal deadline to August 1st, he announced 25% tariffs on goods from Japan and South Korea, effective August 1st. This announcement, communicated through letters from the White House, signals a more aggressive trade policy stance. Further exacerbating market anxieties, President Trump issued a social media post threatening additional levies on countries aligning with the BRICS nations (Brazil, India, China, and Russia). The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, indicated that more tariff announcements or trade deals are forthcoming.
The broader market also experienced a negative trend, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s actions. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 indexes both fell by approximately 1%, while yields on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds climbed, nearing 4.4%. This confluence of negative indicators—Trump’s trade policy, broader market downturns, and rising Treasury yields—contributed to the decline in cryptocurrency prices. The overall market reaction suggests a heightened sensitivity to geopolitical and macroeconomic factors, underscoring the interconnectedness of traditional and digital assets. The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected in the coming days as the administration clarifies its trade policy objectives. Investors will closely monitor the evolving situation for its potential impact on cryptocurrency valuations.
