Jack Dorsey Unveils Bitchat: Offline, Encrypted Messaging Inspired by Bitcoin

Jack Dorsey, the founder of X (formerly Twitter) and Block (SQ), has unveiled a whitepaper detailing Bitchat, a novel decentralized messaging protocol. This protocol offers fully encrypted communication without reliance on internet infrastructure. Bitchat leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, enabling nearby devices to create a self-organizing mesh network for message relay. This hop-by-hop transmission method enhances resilience in scenarios involving offline access or censorship.

The security architecture of Bitchat is robust. Messages employ end-to-end encryption using Curve25519 and AES-GCM algorithms, guaranteeing confidentiality and preventing unauthorized access. Only the intended recipient can decrypt and read the message. The protocol’s design prioritizes user privacy by avoiding metadata collection. User identities are obfuscated, and messages are automatically deleted after delivery unless the recipient chooses to save them.

Although not explicitly mentioning Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or blockchain, the whitepaper’s description of Bitchat as a “decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging application” draws parallels to Bitcoin’s own description as a “peer-to-peer version of electronic cash.” This comparison highlights a key similarity: both technologies aim to circumvent centralized intermediaries. Just as Bitcoin disrupts traditional finance by eliminating reliance on banks and payment processors, Bitchat seeks to decentralize digital communication, removing the control wielded by central authorities and potentially large tech companies.
