Key Market Dynamic Keeps Bitcoin, XRP Anchored to $110K and $2.3 as Ether Looks Prone to Volatility

Market makers, crucial for exchange liquidity, are significantly influencing Bitcoin (BTC), XRP (XRP), and Ether (ETH) price movements. Their strategies, focused on maintaining price-neutral exposure and profiting from the bid-ask spread, often impact market volatility.

In the Bitcoin market, options market makers exhibit a “long gamma” position at strike prices of $108,000 and $110,000, based on Deribit options data tracked by Amberdata. This long position, encompassing both calls and puts, suggests a strategy designed to profit from volatility. Consequently, market makers are likely countering price fluctuations – selling high and buying low – to maintain a neutral order book, effectively pinning BTC within the $108,000-$110,000 range, a trend observed throughout the month according to CoinDesk data.

A comparable scenario appears in the XRP market. A substantial positive market maker gamma buildup at the $2.30 strike price indicates a strategy of buying low and selling high around this level, thus limiting price volatility. This suggests market makers are actively managing XRP’s price to remain around the $2.30 mark.

However, the situation differs for Ether (ETH). After reaching a high of $2,647, a level last seen on June 16, ETH has entered a “negative market maker gamma” zone between $2,650 and $3,500. Unlike BTC and XRP, market makers with negative gamma tend to amplify market movements, trading in the same direction. Therefore, their hedging activities could fuel ETH’s bullish momentum, increasing volatility if other market factors remain consistent. This divergence highlights the distinct market dynamics at play for each cryptocurrency and the complex role of market makers in shaping price behavior. The current sideways movement of BTC and XRP, and the potential volatility in ETH, underscores the impact of these sophisticated hedging strategies.
