Bitcoin at High Leaves Crypto Stocks Mixed as Strategy, Galaxy Gain, Coinbase Falls
Bitcoin’s surge to a record high above $118,000 on Thursday, representing a 5.78% increase over 24 hours, triggered a mixed response among crypto-related stocks. While some companies directly benefiting from Bitcoin’s rise experienced gains, others saw their share prices decline.
MicroStrategy (MSTR), known for its substantial Bitcoin holdings, saw a 3.2% increase. Similarly, Galaxy Digital (GLXY), a provider of institutional crypto trading services, rose by 4%. This positive correlation extended internationally, with Metplanet (3350) in Japan, mirroring MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin treasury strategy, rising 2.9%. The Blockchain Group (ALTBG) in Paris, employing a similar approach, saw a more significant increase of 9.3%.
Bitcoin mining companies also experienced gains, reflecting the increased value of their BTC output. Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) rose 3.2%, Hive Blockchain Technologies (HIVE) gained 2.1%, and Riot Platforms (RIOT) increased by 1.5%. However, not all miners shared this positive trend. Cipher Mining (CIFR) fell 2.5%, and Bit Digital (BTBT) dropped 1%, highlighting the varied fortunes within the sector.
The impact extended beyond mining companies. Coinbase (COIN), a major cryptocurrency exchange, experienced a 1.6% decrease. Circle Internet Financial (CRCL), the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, saw a more substantial decline of 7%, despite still trading at over six times its IPO price of $31 a month prior. This suggests that the overall market reaction to Bitcoin’s price increase is not uniformly positive.
Cantor Equity Partners (CEP), in the process of transforming into a listed Bitcoin investment company named Twenty One Capital, saw an 8.2% increase, adding to the mixed signals in the market. The divergence in performance underscores the complex interplay of factors influencing stock prices within the cryptocurrency ecosystem, where even a record Bitcoin high does not guarantee uniform gains across all related companies.
