Asia Morning Briefing: How Will Coinbase Rebrand Its Wallet?

Coinbase Wallet is getting a rebrand, transitioning from its current name to a yet-to-be-announced title, speculated to be “The Base App.” This rebranding aligns with Base’s push for decentralization and aims to differentiate the wallet from Coinbase itself. The Base creator, Jesse Pollak, now heads Coinbase’s Wallet team, supporting this theory. This isn’t Coinbase’s first wallet rebranding; it was initially launched as “Toshi” before becoming Coinbase Wallet in 2018.

Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest expresses strong institutional confidence in Ethereum’s future, praising its planned zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) upgrade. This upgrade would significantly improve scalability and privacy by allowing validators to verify cryptographic proofs instead of re-executing transactions, drastically reducing computational overhead. While acknowledging limited technical understanding, Wood’s endorsement underscores growing institutional interest. The upgrade aims to enhance network throughput and decentralization, though it presents challenges regarding potential liveness risks if provers go offline or collude. The Ethereum Foundation plans to mitigate these risks through diversity, protocol enhancements, and eventually allowing home participation in proof generation. This integration of ZKPs would make Ethereum the first major blockchain to achieve this, strengthening its dominance. Combined with cheaper data availability and zk-rollup advancements, Ethereum is positioning itself as the most scalable blockchain.

Bitcoin surged 1% to nearly $119,000, driven by high trading volumes and BlackRock’s IBIT exceeding $80 billion in AUM. Ethereum also saw significant gains, surpassing $3,000 for the first time since February. Gold prices climbed to $3,371, fueled by continued central bank accumulation. However, Asia-Pacific markets opened lower due to President Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on the EU and Mexico. CoinDesk’s “Chart of the Week” explores the potential of “hyperbitcoinization,” and a preview of Congress’s “Crypto Week” is also available. Finally, Coinbase has hired AlexOnchain as its first “Crypto Twitter lead” to bolster its social media presence.
