ARK Invest Sells $8.64M Coinbase Stake After Crypto Exchange’s Shares Rally to Record

ARK Invest, the investment management firm led by Cathie Wood, recently reduced its holdings in Coinbase (COIN) shares. This strategic move occurred despite Coinbase’s stock reaching record highs, a seemingly counterintuitive action. The sales transpired over two days: Friday and Thursday.

On Friday, ARK Invest sold 5,596 COIN shares from its Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW). Based on Friday’s closing price of $387.06, this transaction amounted to $2.17 million. This followed a larger sale on Thursday, where 16,627 COIN shares were offloaded from ARK’s Innovation ETF (ARKK). This Thursday sale was valued at $6.47 million based on that day’s closing price. The total value of both sales reached $8.64 million.

The timing of these sales is noteworthy. Coinbase’s stock price hit a record high above $395 on Friday, coinciding with Bitcoin’s ascent to an all-time high of approximately $118,000. This surge in both Bitcoin and Coinbase’s value created a market environment where profits could be realized.

ARK Invest’s actions are consistent with its established investment strategy. The firm typically aims to avoid any single holding exceeding 10% of an ETF’s total value. This policy, designed to maintain portfolio diversification, likely prompted the sales as Coinbase’s share price significantly increased, potentially exceeding ARK’s internal weighting thresholds. The sales represent a strategic rebalancing to maintain the firm’s predefined investment guidelines.

In pre-market trading, COIN is currently priced at $393.50, representing a 1.66% increase from Friday’s closing price. This price action reflects the continued upward momentum in the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high above $122,000, further illustrating the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency market and the complexities of managing investments within it. The strategic divestment by ARK Invest underscores the dynamic nature of investment decisions in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape. Such actions are driven by a complex interplay of market conditions, internal portfolio management strategies, and the inherent volatility within the cryptocurrency sector.
