The trial of Roman Storm, a developer of the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, commenced on Monday, July 14, 2025, in a lower Manhattan courthouse. A jury of twelve—seven women and five men—has been selected, representing a diverse range of ages and backgrounds, including an IT manager and an employee of Palantir. Their educational levels span from high school diplomas to a master’s degree.

Storm faces charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions, and conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. The prosecution’s case is expected to unfold over approximately four weeks. Opening arguments began on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, and are anticipated to conclude by the end of the business day.

A key point of contention revolves around the admissibility of evidence, specifically communications between Storm and Alexey Pertsev, another Tornado Cash developer. The defense is challenging the prosecution’s interpretation of certain messages, arguing that they misrepresent the authors. A central example involves a message concerning the Axie Infinity Ronin Bridge hack.

The indictment claims that Pertsev contacted Storm and Roman Semenov (another Tornado Cash developer) via an encrypted app, inquiring about cashing out $600 million. The defense counters that this message originated from a former CoinDesk reporter, sent to a group chat including other CoinDesk staff and the defendants. This is presented as one instance among many where the prosecution’s interpretation of evidence is disputed. The defense contends that a portion of the messages obtained from Pertsev inaccurately identifies the authors.

The trial’s proceedings will focus on whether the prosecution can sufficiently demonstrate Storm’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt on all three counts. The jury’s deliberations will ultimately determine the outcome of this significant case concerning cryptocurrency regulation and the potential legal ramifications for developers of decentralized technologies.
