Early Bitcoiner Adam Back Nears $3.5B BTC Deal With Brandon Lutnick-Led Cantor SPAC: FT
Cantor Fitzgerald, a prominent Wall Street investment bank, is reportedly on the verge of a significant bitcoin acquisition. Chairman Brandon Lutnick’s blank check company, Cantor Equity Partners 1, is in advanced negotiations with Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream and a prominent early bitcoin advocate, for a deal potentially exceeding $3 billion.
The proposed transaction involves Cantor acquiring approximately 30,000 bitcoins from Back, currently valued at roughly $3.5 billion. In exchange, Back would receive equity in Cantor Equity Partners 1, which would subsequently be renamed BSTR Holdings. This isn’t a simple asset purchase; the firm intends to raise an additional $800 million in external capital to bolster the investment. An official announcement is anticipated within days, pending finalization of the terms.
This move follows Cantor Fitzgerald’s prior foray into bitcoin investment vehicles. Their previous venture, Twenty One Capital, secured backing from notable players like SoftBank, Tether, and Bitfinex, and was spearheaded by Jack Mallers, CEO of the bitcoin payment app Strike. This illustrates a broader trend in the financial sector: leveraging publicly traded companies to execute large-scale crypto treasury strategies. These strategies involve raising capital from investors specifically to acquire digital assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum’s Ether, or Solana’s SOL.
Adam Back’s involvement adds another layer of significance. He’s been actively involved in funding several bitcoin-centric companies throughout the year, including Sweden’s H100 Group and France’s Blockchain Group, highlighting his continued commitment to the cryptocurrency’s growth. The deal signifies a substantial commitment to Bitcoin from a major financial institution, potentially reflecting growing institutional confidence in the cryptocurrency’s long-term value and its increasing global adoption. The success of this venture could further propel this emerging trend of large-scale institutional bitcoin investment. The influx of capital and the involvement of established financial players like Cantor Fitzgerald underscores the evolving landscape of the cryptocurrency market.
