Ethereum Has Already Won—Paul Brody

Ethereum’s 10th anniversary marks a significant milestone. While much debate surrounds its future dominance, the author argues that Ethereum has already secured its position as the leading blockchain platform. This perspective, from a long-time ETH maximalist with experience in both Ethereum’s early days and traditional tech (including IBM’s early blockchain work), draws parallels between Ethereum’s growth and that of other successful technology platforms.

The core argument rests on the “winner-take-nearly-all” nature of technology platforms. This stems from two key factors: near-zero marginal cost of adding users and powerful network effects. While early platform battles often see rapid shifts in leadership, these dynamics change as adoption matures and network effects strengthen. Ethereum, having surpassed a decade of existence and significant user adoption (over 20% of the US population owning crypto), is now firmly in this later stage.

Although technologically superior blockchains exist, the author emphasizes that the “best” technology doesn’t always win. A platform’s success hinges on reaching a “good enough” level for its use cases; the internet serves as an example, successfully accommodating voice and video despite initial design limitations. Ethereum’s success isn’t solely measured by market share. While its dominance in smart contracts has been challenged, the recent stabilization and resurgence, driven by its layer-2 ecosystem, reinforce its leading position.

The continued existence of other blockchain ecosystems is explained by two factors. First, complete market dominance takes time to fully manifest. Second, many competing chains are run by foundations, lacking the shareholder pressure that would force less successful projects to exit the market. This ensures their continued presence, regardless of their competitive standing.

Drawing on historical examples like Microsoft Windows and IBM mainframes, the author concludes that once a technology platform achieves a dominant position, it’s exceptionally difficult to displace. The enduring success of Windows and IBM’s mainframe business supports this assertion. Therefore, the author predicts Ethereum’s continued preeminence for decades to come.
