Strategy Aims to Raise Another $500M for Bitcoin Buys With New Preferred Series

MicroStrategy (MSTR), a prominent corporate holder of Bitcoin, has announced a new fundraising initiative to bolster its Bitcoin reserves. The company is offering 5 million shares of a new preferred stock, dubbed “stretch” internally, at a price of $100 per share, aiming to raise $500 million. This preferred stock, designated STRC, will carry an initial dividend rate of 9%.

This move represents the latest in a series of fundraising efforts by MicroStrategy to acquire more Bitcoin. The company has already successfully utilized other preferred stock offerings—STRK, STRF, and STRD—to accumulate BTC. Furthermore, last week alone, MicroStrategy raised an additional $736 million through an at-the-market common stock program, also earmarked for Bitcoin purchases.

The sheer scale of MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin holdings underscores the company’s aggressive investment strategy. Currently, MSTR boasts over 600,000 Bitcoin, representing a substantial asset worth approximately $72 billion at current market prices. This makes MicroStrategy a significant player in the corporate Bitcoin ownership landscape, establishing it as a major force in the cryptocurrency market.

The introduction of STRC preferred stock provides MicroStrategy with another avenue to continue its Bitcoin accumulation strategy. The 9% dividend rate is intended to attract investors, offering a potentially attractive yield. The success of this fundraising round will likely depend on several factors, including investor sentiment towards Bitcoin, prevailing market conditions, and the overall perception of MicroStrategy’s long-term strategy. The relatively muted reaction in after-hours trading suggests a degree of market anticipation for this announcement, although longer-term effects remain to be seen.

MicroStrategy’s consistent and substantial investments in Bitcoin signal a strong belief in the long-term potential of the cryptocurrency. This commitment contrasts sharply with the more cautious approaches adopted by many other corporations. The company’s actions will likely continue to be closely watched by both the cryptocurrency community and the broader financial market, as MicroStrategy’s aggressive strategy continues to shape the narrative around corporate Bitcoin adoption.
