Altcoin Season Takes Breather With SOL, XRP, TON Among Those Posting Heavy Losses
Altcoin markets experienced a significant correction on Wednesday, signaling a potential pause or even an end to the anticipated “altcoin season” before it fully materialized. This downturn saw Bitcoin dominance surge back above 60%, as Bitcoin itself remained relatively stable amidst the volatility. The correction resulted in over $200 million in liquidations across various cryptocurrencies, with substantial losses on Ethereum (ETH) and XRP (XRP) markets—$43 million and $32 million respectively.
XRP, despite a slight recovery from its daily low, closed down 5.2% for the 24-hour period. Other altcoins, including Solana (SOL) and TON, suffered even steeper declines, experiencing losses of 7% and 11%, respectively. These sharp drops are attributed to the significantly lower liquidity in altcoin trading pairs compared to Bitcoin. For instance, Bitcoin boasts approximately $40 million in market depth on both sides of the order book on major exchanges like Binance and Coinbase. In contrast, XRP’s market depth is considerably shallower, ranging from $5 million to $6 million on each side, making it highly susceptible to significant price swings from even moderately sized sell orders. A $6 million sell order in XRP, for example, would result in approximately 2% slippage, excluding the impact of liquidations.
Market participants are closely monitoring whether altcoins can rebound after the recent technical breakouts observed last week. For Ethereum, maintaining a price above $3,470 is crucial. Holding this level would suggest a bullish reversal, transforming the previous resistance level into support. Conversely, a breach below $3,470 could trigger further liquidations and exacerbate the altcoin market downturn. The substantial open interest in ETH, currently at $24 billion—significantly higher than the 2021 peak of under $10 billion—highlights the significant leverage employed in the recent market activity.
CoinMarketCap’s altcoin season indicator reflects the market weakness, dropping from 55 to 47 out of 100, despite increased retail participation. A resurgence of altcoin season is anticipated only if Bitcoin establishes a new all-time high above $124,000 and consolidates above that level, freeing capital to flow into higher-risk altcoin investments. The current market conditions underscore the importance of liquidity and leverage in the cryptocurrency space, particularly in the volatile altcoin sector.
