Bitcoin Whale Wagers $23.7M on BTC Rally to $200K by Year-End
Bitcoin’s recent price consolidation hasn’t dampened bullish sentiment among large investors (“whales”). A significant bullish options trade recently executed highlights this conviction. A whale invested $23.7 million in a bull call spread strategy on Deribit, targeting a Bitcoin price of $200,000 by year’s end.
This strategy involved buying 3,500 December call options with a strike price of $140,000 and simultaneously selling 3,500 December call options with a strike price of $200,000. This creates a defined-risk trade; the maximum loss is limited to the initial $23.7 million net debit. The maximum profit is achieved if Bitcoin reaches or exceeds $200,000 by the expiration date. The trade profits from the difference between the premiums paid and received, leveraging the perceived difference in implied volatility between the $140,000 and $200,000 strike prices. Deribit Insights highlighted this trade as a significant indicator of market sentiment.
The trade underscores the growing institutional interest in Bitcoin and the increasing use of options for speculation and hedging. The options market’s activity reflects this, with record levels observed recently. Deribit, a dominant player accounting for over 80% of global Bitcoin options volume, saw open interest (the number of outstanding contracts) approach an all-time high of 372,490 BTC, slightly below June’s peak of 377,892 BTC.
Concurrently, Ether (ETH) options open interest on Deribit reached a record high of 2,851,577 ETH, indicating significant activity in the broader cryptocurrency derivatives market. This surge in options trading volume, particularly in structured products involving volatility selling, reflects both the increasing institutional participation and the ongoing price volatility within the cryptocurrency market. The whale’s significant bet on a substantial Bitcoin price increase serves as a compelling illustration of this prevailing bullish sentiment, despite the recent price stabilization. This high-stakes trade suggests a strong belief in Bitcoin’s future price appreciation.
