Ethereum ETFs Pull In $8.7B in First Year After Almost $5B Rush in Past Two Weeks

The launch of U.S.-listed spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on July 23, 2024 marked a significant milestone in the crypto market. Despite substantial outflows from Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust (ETHE), these ETFs have demonstrated remarkable resilience, attracting nearly $8.7 million in net inflows within their first year. While this figure is modest compared to Bitcoin ETF inflows, it reflects a growing investor interest and positive market momentum.

A recent surge in investor activity, particularly over the past two weeks, has significantly boosted ETF inflows. More than $4.6 billion flowed into these funds during this period—nearly half of their total annual inflows—directly correlating with a sharp increase in ether’s (ETH) price. ETH experienced a remarkable price surge, gaining 26% in the week of July 14, following a 16% increase the previous week. This outperformance against the broader market propelled ETH’s price to $3,704, representing an 11% year-to-date increase.

BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) has emerged as a leader, surpassing $10 billion in assets under management this week. This achievement marks ETHA as the third-fastest ETF to reach this milestone, a testament to its rapid adoption. Only BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) achieved this feat faster.

The successful debut of Ethereum ETFs follows the highly successful launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs, which attracted billions of dollars and reignited Wall Street’s enthusiasm for crypto-based products. Major financial institutions like Fidelity, VanEck, Franklin Templeton, and Grayscale are among those offering Ethereum ETFs, highlighting the growing institutional acceptance of this asset class.

The ETFs’ performance is further bolstered by fifteen consecutive days of net inflows, indicating a robust and sustained investor appetite. This positive trend is likely fueled by increased optimism surrounding clearer crypto regulations in the U.S. The SEC’s recent indications of openness to crypto legislation and industry collaboration have encouraged traders to reinvest in digital assets, further contributing to the success of Ethereum ETFs. The combined factors of positive price action, institutional backing, and regulatory progress suggest a promising future for Ethereum ETFs in the U.S. market.
