Coinbase Reaps Growing Rewards from Circle Ties and USDC Economics: JPMorgan

Coinbase (COIN) stands to gain significantly from its partnership with Circle (CRCL) and its exposure to the USDC stablecoin, according to a recent JPMorgan report. The report highlights substantial financial benefits for Coinbase, encompassing both equity appreciation and lucrative revenue streams. JPMorgan estimates the total value of Circle-related economics for Coinbase shareholders to be between $55 and $60 billion, suggesting a potential market undervaluation of the USDC ecosystem’s strategic importance.

Coinbase’s direct investment in Circle adds to this considerable value. As of July 25th, Coinbase held 8.5 million Circle shares, representing a $1.6 billion stake. However, the report emphasizes that the true potential lies within the revenue generated from USDC activity.

During the first quarter of 2024, Coinbase received approximately $300 million in distribution payments from Circle, exceeding Circle’s total net revenue of $230 million for the same period. This highlights the significant financial leverage Coinbase enjoys within the USDC ecosystem.

Further illustrating this advantage, JPMorgan estimates that Coinbase held $13 billion in USDC balances on its platform at the end of Q1 2024. This generated an estimated $125 million in revenue, boasting impressive margins of 20-25%.

Beyond on-platform activity, Coinbase benefits from a 50/50 revenue-sharing agreement with Circle on the Circle Reserve Fund. This resulted in an additional $170 million in income during the first quarter, achieving near-100% margins. This substantial revenue stream underscores the mutually beneficial nature of the partnership.

Despite the significant financial upside revealed by the report, JPMorgan maintains a neutral rating on Coinbase stock, setting a price target of $404. This contrasts with the stock’s early Tuesday trading price of approximately $381, suggesting potential for further growth. The report’s findings, however, strongly suggest that the market may be underestimating the long-term value of Coinbase’s relationship with Circle and USDC.
