Base Takes Solana’s Crown in Token Creation as Coinbase’s ‘SocialFi’ Ignites Zora Boom

Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, has surpassed Solana in daily token issuances, primarily due to the surge in activity on Zora, a rapidly growing on-chain social network. This rise follows Coinbase’s July rebranding of the Base App into a consumer-facing platform for SocialFi (on-chain social finance).

The redesigned app integrates social feeds with token minting, enabling users to create tokens directly from their posts. This feature has significantly boosted the ZORA token, which powers the Base network. The token experienced a remarkable 440% weekly increase during the app’s launch, although it has since seen a slight dip. Despite this, it remains over 500% higher than its price a month ago.

Zora’s activity has reached unprecedented levels since the Base App relaunch. Metrics reveal over 1.6 million Creator Coins minted, nearly 3 million unique traders, and a total volume exceeding $470 million. The platform’s “Creator Coin” model simplifies token creation, making each post an instantly tradable asset. This model distributes half of a fixed 1 billion token supply to the creator over five years, with the other half available to the market. A 1% fee on each trade is returned to the content creator in ZORA tokens, directly linking engagement to earnings.

While this model’s simplicity resembles traditional social media, it’s not without criticism. TK Research highlights Zora’s strong momentum in content token creation and user growth, but notes that most users appear to be traders, suggesting a focus on short-term speculation. This parallels concerns about memecoins, often criticized for lacking practical use cases. Furthermore, Zora’s governance structure, or lack thereof, has sparked online backlash.

Despite the controversies, Base’s memecoin and creator economies are experiencing rapid growth, with Zora playing a central role. Whether content coins represent a fleeting trend or a lasting innovation remains a topic of ongoing discussion. However, the significant increase in activity on Base and Zora undeniably demonstrates the growing appeal of this retail-driven approach to the creator economy.
