Cardano Community Approves $70M Core Dev Budget, Boosting ADA Prospects

Cardano’s network is poised for significant upgrades thanks to a recently approved $71 million treasury allocation. Input Output Global (IOG), Cardano’s core development team, secured this funding after a lengthy governance process that sparked debate regarding transparency and cost efficiency. The proposal, ultimately passing with 74% approval, allocates 96 million ADA – approximately 13% of the protocol’s treasury – to IOG over the next year.

This substantial investment will fuel crucial development initiatives. Disbursement will be milestone-based, subject to oversight from Intersect, a member-driven governance body. Further accountability measures include smart contracts and an independent committee, ensuring responsible use of funds.

Key projects slated for development include Hydra, a layer-2 scaling solution designed to accelerate transaction speeds and reduce costs. Project Acropolis aims to revamp the Cardano node, enhancing modularity and simplifying developer onboarding. IOG also plans to optimize validator operations, reducing memory usage and operational expenses.

These improvements are anticipated to stimulate developer activity and attract new use cases to the Cardano network, subsequently driving demand for ADA, Cardano’s native cryptocurrency. The proposal, debated since the beginning of the year, faced opposition due to concerns about the lack of detailed cost breakdowns and the decision to bundle numerous upgrades into a single proposal rather than submitting them as separate, individually voted items. A competing proposal from Cardano’s Technical Steering Committee was ultimately rejected.

The Cardano upgrades are part of a broader trend among competing blockchain networks. Solana recently boosted its compute unit ceiling by 20%, while Ethereum’s recent Pectra upgrade increased its blob limit and staking caps. Further significant developments are anticipated, including a major Ethereum fork, Fusaka, scheduled for late 2025. The competitive landscape highlights the ongoing efforts by various blockchain platforms to enhance scalability, efficiency, and developer experience. The success of Cardano’s upgrades will be closely monitored as it strives to maintain its position in the dynamic blockchain ecosystem.
