Credit Agricole’s Asset Servicing Unit Backs Tokenized SME Exchange in Europe

CACEIS, Credit Agricole’s asset servicing division, has invested in Kriptown, a French fintech company, to facilitate the launch of Lise, a groundbreaking blockchain-based exchange. This strategic move underscores CACEIS’s commitment to digital asset innovation, following its recent MiCA approval.

Lise, or Lightning Stock Exchange, is poised to revolutionize equity financing for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and mid-cap companies across Europe. It aims to become the continent’s first tokenized exchange, streamlining the often complex and costly process of initial public offerings (IPOs). By leveraging blockchain technology, Lise promises significant efficiency gains.

Currently awaiting regulatory approval as a DLT Trading and Settlement System (DLT TSS) under the European pilot regime, Lise will, if approved, allow companies to issue, trade, and settle financial instruments directly on a distributed ledger. This innovative approach eliminates the time-consuming and expensive procedures associated with traditional IPOs, reducing reliance on multiple intermediaries and the bottlenecks inherent in traditional clearing houses.

The benefits for companies extend beyond cost and time savings. Lise offers a 24/7 secondary market for shares, providing continuous liquidity and enhanced accessibility for investors. This increased liquidity can be particularly beneficial for SMEs and mid-cap companies, which often struggle to attract and retain investors.

Kriptown, established in 2018, brings essential expertise in tokenizing financial instruments and integrating both market and post-trade operations to the partnership. Their technology forms the backbone of Lise’s functionality. The first IPO on Lise is tentatively scheduled for 2025, subject to regulatory approvals.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the adoption of blockchain technology within the European financial sector. It demonstrates the potential of distributed ledger technology to transform traditional financial processes, making equity financing more efficient, accessible, and cost-effective for smaller companies. The success of Lise could pave the way for wider adoption of similar solutions across various markets. CACEIS’s investment underscores their belief in the transformative potential of this technology and its capacity to reshape the landscape of European capital markets.
