Philippines SEC Cracks Down on Unregistered Crypto Exchanges as New Rules Kick In

The Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is cracking down on unregistered cryptocurrency exchanges operating within the country. In a recent notice, the SEC named several prominent platforms—OKX, ByBit, Bitget, Mexc, KuCoin, and Kraken—for operating without the necessary registration and warned the public against using their services. This action underscores the SEC’s commitment to regulating the cryptocurrency sector in the Philippines and protecting investors.

The SEC’s move follows the implementation of new regulations on July 5th, requiring cryptocurrency firms to obtain authorization before offering services within the Philippines. These regulations mandate compliance with anti-money laundering measures, including robust suspicious transaction reporting and thorough customer due diligence processes. The commission’s firm stance is evidenced by its previous action against Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. Binance was blocked in the Philippines in March 2022 for operating without the required license, a situation that remains unresolved.

The SEC’s notice highlights the significant implications for unregistered exchanges. Operating without the proper authorization exposes these platforms to potential legal repercussions and puts Filipino users at risk. The lack of regulatory oversight increases the chances of fraud, scams, and other illicit activities. The SEC’s actions aim to mitigate these risks and foster a more secure and transparent cryptocurrency market within the country.

While some exchanges have responded to the SEC’s advisory, others remain silent. Bitget, for example, acknowledged the notice and stated its commitment to obtaining the necessary licenses in all markets where it operates. OKX, however, declined to comment, while ByBit, Mexc, KuCoin, and Kraken did not respond to requests for comment at the time of publication. This lack of response further underscores the SEC’s concerns regarding the lack of regulatory compliance within the Philippine cryptocurrency market. The SEC’s ongoing efforts to regulate the sector signify a broader global trend toward increased scrutiny and oversight of the cryptocurrency industry. The commission’s actions serve as a cautionary tale for other exchanges operating in the Philippines without the necessary licenses and highlight the growing importance of regulatory compliance in the rapidly evolving world of digital assets.
