A long-awaited digital collectible feature has finally arrived on Instagram after parent company Meta announced last week that its non-fungible tokens (NFTs) would be available to millions of U.S. users. The new feature lets Facebook and Instagram users connect their cryptocurrency wallets to their accounts and show off their NFTs. Meta also announced NFT support on Instagram for 100 different countries.
When Facebook renamed itself Meta last year, it was intended to focus on the future of technology and the metaverse where people can share new types of art, music, entertainment, and businesses.  The tech giant has been working on its digital collectible features for months and now it has come up with a unique feature that could bring new users to the world of digital assets and cryptocurrency. Interestingly, the announcement follows the sale of an NFT of Mark Zuckerberg’s childhood baseball card for $105,000.
Facebook and Instagram users will be able to connect hot wallets such as Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, and Dapper Wallet to post digital collectibles from Ethereum, Polygon, and Flow.
In order to share NFTs, users must first download the latest version of Facebook or Instagram in their phones. Next, they should ensure that their preferred digital wallet is installed on their phone. After signing into Facebook or Instagram app, users can connect their wallets by selecting the “digital collectibles” tab under settings.
Users can upload their NFTs to a collectibles folder and then share them in posts as they usually do. NFT posts will have a shimmer effect to differentiate them from regular posts. Meta won't charge anything for posting or sharing digital collectibles on Instagram or Facebook.

Social media sites have been participating in the NFT world for some time now. Earlier this year, Twitter introduced a feature that allows users to show off their NFTs as Profile Pictures to Twitter Blue subscribers. Similarly, Reddit launched a new NFT-based avatar marketplace that allows users to purchase blockchain-based profile pictures for a fixed rate.
Social media sites are becoming obsessed with NFTs because digital content is easily accessible on the platform. Now that tech giants are exploring Web 3.0, where users are able to post, share and trade content,  it’s inevitable for them to embrace NFTs.
