A hacker stole about $185,00 worth of ethereum from actor and comedian Bill Murray’s crypto wallet, hours after Murray raised the funds in an NFT charity auction.
Coindesk reported that a hacker started to drain Murray’s wallet Thursday, soon after a “Beer With Bill Murray” NFT collectible sold for 119.2 ethereum ETHUSD, -0.33% — about $185,0000 — after a bidding war. Murray’s team was to donate the funds to a non-profit serving veterans and first responders, Coinbase said.
According to the Coindesk report, Murray’s team was able to foil parts of the hack and protected about 800 NFTs in Murray’s collection.
Project Venkman, a partner in the NFT auction that is co-owned by Murray, confirmed the hack in a tweet Friday. “Last evening Bill’s wallet was hacked in a coordinated effort by hackers that stole the funds raised in the auction. We will not stand for that,” Project Venkman said, as they announced a GoFundMe campaign to make up the loss.
Chive Charities tweeted Saturday that the fundraising campaign was a success, and was “thrilled to announce we’ve surpassed the $25,000 goal in less than 24 hours.”
And in another bit of good news, one of the auction’s runners-up donated 120 ethereum — worth about $187,500 — to the charity to replace the filched funds, Coindesk reported.
Murray’s team is reportedly working with the police and crypto analytics firm Chainalysis to track down the hacker.
As many segments of the economy roar back from pandemic-driven slumps, consumers still aren't returning to stores like they used to.
