ST. PETERSBURG — When the Rays hold their Wander Franco bobblehead game Saturday, the promotional giveaway will have a modern twist: non-fungible tokens.
The traditional bobblehead will be available while supplies last, but all fans in attendance will receive a digitally collectible NFT through Candy Digital, an MLB-wide partner. After registering for the NFT, they’ll also have the opportunity to claim a free ticket for an August game. The NFT will have three different tiers — light blue, gold and Devil Rays-themed versions — assigned at random, with each level containing future benefits that have yet to be determined.
“It’s definitely kind of an old school meets new school,” Rays chief business officer Bill Walsh said.
When fans scan their ticket at Tropicana Field, email accounts associated with the ticket will then trigger a follow-up message with information on claiming the NFT. The design of the NFT is centered around a commemorative ticket, which Walsh said will correspond with the fan’s seat location from that night. Each version will have different art and a different color scheme, too.
It was an idea that first started to brew last offseason, Walsh said. The league partnered with Candy Digital, and the Rays started to look at dates to slide the NFT promotion into their schedule. Walsh said he doesn’t anticipate 100% of people at the game will claim the NFT — there have only been a few of these promotions across the league, and Saturday’s event will still be part of the learning process.
But, Walsh added, hopefully the test run helps with educating about NFTs while allowing the Rays to be innovative and serve as the “tip of the space into the space.”
“NFTs are still maybe new and mysterious to folks,” Walsh said, “and really (we’re) just trying to demystify it as this is really just kind of a digital version of a baseball card — which most people are familiar with.”

ST. PETERSBURG — As has oft been the case over the last 14 years, when finishes at or near the top of the standings left them around the bottom of the draft order, the Rays won’t really know what they’re going to do in Sunday night’s first round until a few picks before their No. 29 selection. “Once you get into the 20s, you start to say, ‘OK, we have these four or five left,’” said Rob …
ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays had done enough to win Saturday, at least until they got to the eighth inning and their most dependable high-leverage reliever, Jason Adam, let them down, allowing a tying homer. And from then on, a series of things they didn’t do right led to a 6-4 loss to the Orioles in 11 innings. The defeat ended the Rays’ five-game winning streak and dropped their American League …

Manager Craig Counsell calls his setup man 'elite' and is hopeful the team gets a call this weekend that Williams will be named to the All-Star Game.
The Baltimore Orioles' winning streak ended at 10 as Christian Bethancourt hit his first home run for Tampa Bay and the Rays rallied for a 5-4 victory Friday night. The winning streak was the Orioles’ longest in a single season since they won 13 straight in 1999. Ramon Urías homered twice for the Orioles, the first multi-home run game of his career, and Trey Mancini also connected.
Cardinals reliever Genesis Cabrera slammed the ball to the ground in frustration when he was removed from the game Friday night, prompting a stern response from manager Oliver Marmol moments before St. Louis closed out a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Cabrera was pulled after giving up consecutive hits to start the ninth inning.

Alex Cobb was fantastic on the mound and the Giants scratched across just enough offense — with a little bit of luck — to seal a 2-1 win over the Brewers.
LOUDON, N.H. — The Nos. 9 and No. 10 Chevrolet Camaros of Noah Gragson and Landon Cassill, respectively, were disqualified after post-race inspection after Saturday’s Crayon 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
