Ripple Integrates Wormhole With XRP Ledger to Power Institutional Multichain Moves
Ripple is enhancing its multichain interoperability capabilities through the integration of Wormhole, a prominent cross-chain messaging protocol, with the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible sidechain. This integration, announced Thursday, is designed to cater to the growing institutional demand for seamless and frictionless cross-chain asset transfers. This includes stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets across a multitude of blockchain networks.
Wormhole’s integration facilitates the transfer of XRP, XRPL-issued assets, and various other tokens across over 35 supported chains, encompassing major networks like Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche. Furthermore, developers gain the ability to leverage Wormhole’s messaging infrastructure to initiate cross-chain smart contract interactions. Ripple emphasizes that this upgrade will be particularly beneficial for developers and institutions building multichain applications that prioritize regulatory compliance, cost-effectiveness, and rapid settlement times.
David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO, highlighted the critical role of interoperability in achieving widespread cryptocurrency adoption. He stated that robust cross-chain infrastructure is essential, not limited to a single blockchain, but extending across numerous networks. This integration positions XRP Ledger-native tokens for broader adoption by enabling seamless movement between blockchains while preserving native issuance and control.
The XRP Ledger’s strategic focus on institutional adoption and tokenized real-world assets is further reinforced by this development. The ledger’s use in Dubai’s first real estate tokenization platform, enabling fractional ownership of apartments and tokenized title deeds, exemplifies this trend. Ripple, a payments-focused blockchain firm closely associated with XRPL, also issues its own regulated stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD). Data from rwa.xyz indicates that RLUSD boasts a $400 million supply distributed across XRP and Ethereum networks. The anticipated launch of the XRPL’s EVM-compatible sidechain in Q2 further underscores Ripple’s commitment to expanding its ecosystem and enhancing its interoperability capabilities. This initiative positions Ripple to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for efficient and compliant cross-chain transactions within the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
