Circle Mania Grips South Korea as Retail Investors Pile Into Stablecoin Play
Circle Internet Financial (CRCL), a New York-listed company, has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity among South Korean retail investors, becoming June’s breakout stock in Seoul. Bloomberg reports that nearly $450 million has flowed into Circle shares, making it the most heavily purchased overseas stock this month and a top-four pick for the year. This investment frenzy has propelled Circle’s stock price up over 500% since its June 5th debut, briefly pushing its market capitalization above $77 billion – exceeding the market cap of its own issued stablecoin, USDC, which currently stands at over $61 billion.
This dramatic rally is consistent with South Korean investor behavior, known for driving exuberant price increases in both their domestic stock market and prominent cryptocurrencies like XRP and Dogecoin. This phenomenon has given rise to the “Kimchi premium,” where local investors’ aggressive pursuit of high-volatility assets inflates prices on local exchanges by 10-20% compared to global markets.
The heightened demand for Circle is attributed to President Lee Jae Myung’s swift implementation of reforms aimed at legalizing Korean won (KRW)-backed stablecoins. This regulatory move creates a clear path for fintech companies like KakaoPay to issue digital won, boosting investor confidence. KakaoPay’s stock has mirrored this positive sentiment, experiencing a 160% increase in June alone. Korean investors appear to be extrapolating this success to the global stage, viewing Circle as a proxy for broader stablecoin adoption.
Despite its recent public listing, Circle stands out as one of the few companies offering direct exposure to the stablecoin infrastructure layer, a sector currently exhibiting significant growth beyond niche communities. However, the market’s enthusiasm has shown signs of cooling, with Circle’s stock price experiencing a 15% drop following warnings from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) regarding the risks associated with stablecoins. This highlights the inherent volatility within the cryptocurrency market and the potential for rapid shifts in investor sentiment. The situation underscores the need for caution and thorough due diligence when investing in high-growth, yet potentially volatile, sectors.
