Industry’s PAC Keeps Seeking to Add Allies as Congress Hashes Out Crypto Legislation

Fairshake, a significant political action committee (PAC) funded by major players in the cryptocurrency industry, recently contributed $1 million to James Walkinshaw’s campaign. Walkinshaw, favored by Fairshake, won the Democratic primary for Virginia’s special election to replace the late Representative Gerald Connolly. The general election is scheduled for September 9th.

Walkinshaw’s campaign platform emphasizes embracing next-generation technologies, including blockchain, highlighting its potential to reduce business costs and consumer fees. He advocates for modern, risk-based regulatory frameworks that encourage responsible innovation while preventing abuse. This stance contrasts with that of his predecessor, Connolly, who consistently voted against crypto-related legislation.

Fairshake, along with its affiliated super PACs, Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, emerged prominently during the 2024 congressional elections. It amassed a substantial war chest from companies like Coinbase, Ripple, and a16z, deploying funds strategically in key races. In many instances, Fairshake’s spending significantly outweighed that of opposing campaigns. This resulted in a considerable increase in the number of crypto-supportive members of Congress.

The group’s strategy extends to special elections, as evidenced by its involvement in Walkinshaw’s campaign. Protect Progress, focusing on Democratic candidates, provided the funding for Walkinshaw’s bid. Fairshake’s approach involves making “independent expenditures,” purchasing advertising without direct candidate approval or communication. Interestingly, these ads rarely mention digital assets, instead concentrating on broader political themes likely to resonate with voters.

Fairshake’s significant financial resources, approximately $116 million, position it for influence in the upcoming 2026 congressional election cycle. Current members of Congress supported by Fairshake are actively involved in shaping major cryptocurrency legislation currently under consideration. The group’s success highlights the growing political influence of the cryptocurrency industry and its strategic use of campaign finance to advance its agenda.
