‘Regime Change’ at Fed? Crypto Rallies as Pressure Mounts on Chairman Jerome Powell

Bitcoin surged past $120,000 for the first time, fueled by speculation surrounding Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s potential removal. This rally correlates with increasing pressure on Powell, who has adopted a hawkish monetary policy stance contrasting with the easier policies favored by President Trump. This shift in policy, following a period of rapid rate cuts before the 2024 election, has reportedly angered the president.

Former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, a potential Powell replacement, publicly criticized the Fed’s direction, citing its $2.5 billion renovation project as an example of mismanagement and advocating for “regime change.” National Economic Council Director Kevin Hasset, another possible successor, indicated the White House is exploring the president’s authority to dismiss Powell, suggesting that grounds for removal are under consideration.

The Fed’s renovation project has become a focal point of criticism, with questions raised not only about its exorbitant cost but also about potential misrepresentations made by Powell to Congress. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has formally requested clarification from Powell, prompting the Fed to publish an FAQ page addressing the concerns.

President Trump openly voiced his desire for Powell’s departure, criticizing his monetary policy and characterizing it as detrimental to the nation’s economic interests. Trump believes the Fed should maintain the world’s lowest interest rates, a view directly opposed to Powell’s current approach. He further criticized the renovation project, highlighting its cost overruns, and noting its approval during Biden’s presidency.

Beyond monetary policy implications, a change in Fed leadership could positively impact the cryptocurrency community. While Powell has maintained a neutral public stance on crypto, he has consistently advocated for stricter regulations, particularly concerning stablecoins and the risks they pose to financial stability. His concerns also encompass consumer protection and the issue of “debanking,” where financial institutions sever ties with crypto firms due to perceived risks. A new chair might adopt a different regulatory approach, potentially benefiting the crypto market. Powell’s view of Bitcoin as a competitor to gold rather than the dollar may also be reconsidered by his successor.
