Risc Zero’s ‘Boundless’ Incentivized Testnet Goes Live

Boundless, a decentralized zero-knowledge (ZK) compute marketplace built on RISC Zero, has launched its incentivized testnet, dubbed “Mainnet Beta,” on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network. This launch allows developers to build and test applications in a near-live environment, experiencing the functionality of the fully operational protocol. The project has already secured support from key players in the industry, including the Ethereum Foundation, Wormhole, and EigenLayer.

Boundless operates as a decentralized marketplace connecting developers needing zero-knowledge proofs (essential for rollups, bridges, and privacy-focused applications) with a distributed network of independent “ZK provers” or miners. These miners generate and verify proofs, distributing the computational workload and eliminating reliance on centralized entities. Anyone with suitable hardware can participate, contributing computing power and earning rewards for their cryptographic work.

Zero-knowledge technology enables the verification of transaction validity without disclosing sensitive data like identities or amounts. This technology is considered vital for the next generation of scalable and privacy-centric blockchain projects. Boundless employs a Proof of Verifiable Work (PoVW) consensus mechanism. PoVW functions as an open proving market; ZK miners (individuals or institutions with high-performance GPUs) are rewarded for successful proof verification within a ZK Virtual Machine. This approach ensures efficiency, fairness, and security, contrasting with traditional Proof of Work methods.

Participants in the incentivized testnet can earn allocations of the forthcoming $ZKC token through an airdrop planned for later this year. Rewards are based on the volume, speed, and complexity of generated proofs. The official mainnet launch and token release are scheduled for the third quarter of 2025.

Boundless aims to enhance blockchain scalability by facilitating secure, cross-chain computation without redundant tasks. This approach improves efficiency, strengthens security, and fosters collaboration among developers and miners across different ecosystems. As stated by Boundless CEO Shiv Shankar, the platform “makes blockchains more scalable by allowing secure, cross-chain computing without repeating the same tasks.” This highlights the project’s potential to significantly impact the future of blockchain technology.
