Crypto Banking Startup Dakota Raises $12.5M for Global Stablecoin Push

Dakota, a pioneering crypto-integrated banking platform designed for businesses, has secured $12.5 million in Series A funding. This investment round, spearheaded by CoinFund with participation from 6th Man Ventures and Triton Ventures, will fuel the expansion of Dakota’s borderless banking services. This announcement arrives amidst a surge in the integration of stablecoins – cryptocurrencies pegged to external assets, primarily the U.S. dollar – into traditional financial systems. Stablecoins are increasingly recognized for their potential to facilitate cheaper and faster cross-border payments.

The timing is significant, coinciding with the advancement of stablecoin regulation in the U.S. The Senate’s passage of the GENIUS Act, with anticipated House approval imminent, underscores the growing regulatory focus on this sector. CoinFund’s Chief Investment Officer, Alex Felix, highlights the transformative potential of stablecoins in business banking, emphasizing Dakota’s innovative approach of combining the familiarity of traditional bank accounts with the efficiency of crypto infrastructure.

Founded by veterans from prominent tech companies including Coinbase, Square, and Airbnb, Dakota provides businesses with a seamless platform to manage funds in U.S. dollars or stablecoins. The platform integrates with established payment networks such as ACH, SWIFT, and SEPA, allowing businesses to send and receive payments via conventional bank accounts without direct crypto interaction. Underlying this user-friendly interface is a blockchain-based system enabling near-instantaneous settlement of transfers, offering a compelling alternative to traditional banking’s slower processes.

Dakota prioritizes risk mitigation by maintaining full reserves for customer deposits, backed 1:1 by short-term U.S. Treasuries. This strategy aims to eliminate liquidity and counterparty risks, providing a secure and reliable platform for businesses. The newly acquired funding will allow Dakota to expand its services to over 100 countries, encompassing the UK, the European Union, Singapore, and regions of Latin America. Dakota CEO Ryan Bozarth underscores the platform’s mission to provide equitable access to U.S. dollar banking for entrepreneurs globally, irrespective of their location. This expansion reflects a vision of a truly borderless financial landscape, empowering businesses worldwide with the same financial tools readily available to those in established financial hubs.
