Eclipse Launches $ES Airdrop, Distributing 15% of Token Supply

Eclipse, a novel layer-2 blockchain merging Ethereum and Solana technologies, has launched its mainnet alongside an airdrop of its native token, $ES. This marks a significant milestone for the project, which has navigated considerable controversy in its lead-up to launch.

The total $ES supply stands at 1 billion tokens, distributed across several key allocations. A generous 15% is dedicated to an airdrop and liquidity provisions for early community members and developers, acknowledging their crucial contributions to the network’s development. A substantial 35% is earmarked for ecosystem growth and crucial research and development initiatives, reflecting Eclipse’s commitment to scaling its operations. Contributors, including team members, will receive 19% of the total supply, subject to a four-year vesting period and a three-year lockup, aligning incentives with long-term network growth. Finally, 31% is reserved for early supporters and investors, also subject to a three-year lockup period, underscoring a commitment to shared long-term vision.

The $ES token plays a multifaceted role within the Eclipse ecosystem. It functions as the network’s gas token, powering transactions and smart contract execution. Crucially, it also underpins the network’s decentralized governance model. $ES holders will directly participate in shaping the future of Eclipse by voting on key protocol upgrades and fee structures, including the crucial Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) redistribution rates. The team highlights the dynamic nature of the token’s utility, emphasizing that its functionality may expand over time through community governance.

Eclipse’s journey to mainnet launch has not been without its challenges. The network’s launch in November 2024 followed the controversial dismissal of co-founder and former CEO Neel Somani in May 2024 due to sexual misconduct allegations. Further controversy arose in July 2024 following a CoinDesk investigation revealing a previously undisclosed allocation of $ES tokens to a Polychain Capital partner. Eclipse representatives have confirmed that this arrangement has since been terminated. Despite these setbacks, the network’s launch signifies the culmination of considerable effort and marks a pivotal moment in its development.
