PayPal Blockchain Lead José Fernández da Ponte Joins Stellar

José Fernández da Ponte, former head of blockchain at PayPal, has joined the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) as president and chief growth officer. His departure from PayPal, where he oversaw the launch of digital currencies and stablecoins, marks a significant move towards focusing on blockchain infrastructure for financial inclusion. This appointment coincides with the addition of Jason Karsh, a veteran of Block, Blockchain.com, Coinbase, and Blockaid, as the SDF’s new chief marketing officer.

Fernández da Ponte’s decision reflects a commitment to leveraging blockchain technology for humanitarian goals, particularly in underserved communities. He emphasized the decentralized nature of blockchain as a powerful tool for addressing financial inclusion challenges, citing Stellar’s alignment with this mission as a key factor in his move. His prior experience at BBVA and McKinsey, coupled with his recent work on PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin, provides a strong background for his new role.

While acknowledging the upcoming “stablecoin wars,” Fernández da Ponte highlighted the importance of focusing on foundational blockchain technology. He believes that building robust infrastructure is crucial for the scalability and effectiveness of applications like stablecoins. His transition to Stellar represents a strategic shift towards strengthening the underlying technology that supports various financial applications.

Karsh’s appointment brings extensive experience in brand building, product strategy, and ecosystem development. His role will focus on enhancing Stellar’s visibility and adoption among developers, institutions, and the broader public. He underscored Stellar’s position as a foundational financial infrastructure, highlighting its strengths in security, transaction speed, and ease of programmability.

Stellar’s lumen (XLM) token has performed strongly this year, showing a 38% increase, exceeding the CoinDesk 20 Index’s 27% growth. This positive performance reflects growing interest in the Stellar network and its potential to drive innovation in the financial technology sector. The combined expertise of Fernández da Ponte and Karsh positions Stellar for continued growth and expansion in its mission to improve global financial access.
