Crypto Prediction Market Polymarket Weighs Launching Its Own Stablecoin: Source
Polymarket, a prediction market platform recently valued at over $1 billion, is weighing two strategic options concerning stablecoins. The first is creating its own custom stablecoin, driven by the desire to control and profit from the yield generated by the substantial USDC reserves used on its platform. Currently, a significant portion of Polymarket’s betting activity relies on USDC, a stablecoin issued by Circle. The second option involves a revenue-sharing agreement with Circle, based on the amount of USDC held on the platform. A Polymarket spokesperson confirmed that no final decision has been made.
Recent U.S. legislation regarding stablecoins has increased the attractiveness of stablecoin issuance for both established and emerging financial firms, mirroring the success of companies like Tether and Circle. However, launching a stablecoin presents considerable complexities. Circle, recognizing this, has been actively pursuing revenue-sharing partnerships with various entities to maintain its market position.
For Polymarket, creating its own stablecoin offers a potentially simpler regulatory path. A source familiar with the plans highlighted the company’s significant stablecoin holdings within its betting pools. The source explained that a custom stablecoin would allow Polymarket to capture the yield from these reserves. Due to the platform’s closed ecosystem, the complexities of on and off-ramps are minimized, simplifying the development and security of the stablecoin. Circle has not yet commented on the matter.
Polymarket’s platform handles substantial sums; last year’s U.S. election cycle saw approximately $8 billion in bets placed. May 2024 saw around 15.9 million website visits, according to SimilarWeb. The company is also aiming for a formal return to the U.S. market through the acquisition of QCEX, following the resolution of previous investigations into its operations involving U.S.-based users. This strategic move positions Polymarket for future growth and expansion. The choice between creating its own stablecoin or partnering with Circle will significantly influence Polymarket’s future trajectory.
