Solana Eyes 66% Block Size Bump With New Developer Proposal as Network Demand Grows

Solana’s network capacity is poised for a significant expansion. Facing increasing demand for block space, Solana developers are proposing a substantial increase in the network’s block capacity, aiming for a 66% boost. This expansion is detailed in proposal SIMD-0286, which suggests raising the per-block compute limit from 60 million to 100 million compute units (CUs).

The primary driver behind this proposal is the growing need to accommodate heavier applications on the Solana network. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs), MEV (maximal extractable value) systems, and restaking protocols are placing increasing demands on the network’s processing capabilities. The current 60 million CU limit, while an improvement over the previous 50 million, is proving insufficient to meet this burgeoning demand.

The proposal emphasizes that the current block execution times are not significantly constrained by the existing limit. The increase to 100 million CUs aims to provide ample additional capacity without compromising the network’s overall stability. Solana’s block production, occurring every 400 milliseconds, currently operates with strict compute caps per block to ensure network participants can keep pace.

The implementation of SIMD-0286 will be achieved through a software upgrade, enabling validators to opt into the 100 million CU ceiling. This upgrade is anticipated to be deployed in a future epoch following its adoption. Importantly, the proposal focuses solely on increasing the maximum block units (Max Block Units) limit, leaving other limits, such as Max Writable Account Units, unchanged.

This targeted approach ensures that the increased capacity primarily benefits applications with parallelizable transactions, such as DeFi swaps and NFT mints. This prevents increased pressure on individual accounts, maintaining a balance between enhanced capacity and network stability. The recent activation of SIMD-0256, increasing the limit from 50 to 60 million CUs, highlights the iterative approach to optimizing Solana’s performance and responsiveness to the growing needs of its users and developers. The proposed increase to 100 million CUs represents a significant step in this ongoing effort to scale the network’s capabilities.
