SEC Delays Decision on Trump-Linked Truth Social Bitcoin ETF Until September

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delayed its decision on Truth Social’s proposed Bitcoin ETF, pushing the deadline to September 18th. This marks another postponement under the SEC’s new Chair, Paul Atkins, who has also delayed decisions on other crypto ETFs, including Grayscale’s Solana Trust and Canary Capital’s Litecoin ETF. The SEC routinely utilizes the full 270-day review period for ETF applications.

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of the Donald Trump-affiliated social media platform Truth Social, submitted the Bitcoin ETF application in June. This move reflects the company’s growing interest in the cryptocurrency market. The delay allows the SEC sufficient time to thoroughly examine the application and address any concerns. Internal discussions between the SEC and fund issuers have reportedly centered on crucial aspects like staking and in-kind redemptions, especially pertinent to Solana-based ETF applications.

This delay contrasts with the SEC’s previous approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs under former Chair Gary Gensler. Those ETFs, launched in January, have already attracted over $55 billion in investor funds. The current regulatory pause under Atkins suggests a more cautious approach to approving new crypto-related investment products.

Truth Social’s ambition extends beyond a single Bitcoin ETF. The company has also filed applications for a Crypto Blue Chip ETF and a dual Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF, indicating a broader strategic move into the cryptocurrency investment space. The SEC’s decision on Truth Social’s Bitcoin ETF will likely set a precedent for future crypto ETF applications and signal the agency’s evolving stance on cryptocurrency regulation. The extended review period highlights the complexities involved in regulating crypto investments and the SEC’s need for comprehensive assessment before approving such products. The outcome will be closely watched by investors and industry participants alike. The September 18th deadline represents a pivotal moment in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulation and investment.
