Visa Expands Stablecoin Reach in Europe, Middle East and Africa

Visa’s Expansion into Stablecoin Payments Across CEMEA and Partnership with Yellow Card

Visa, a leading payment card network, is significantly expanding its involvement in the stablecoin market, particularly within the Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA) region. This strategic move reflects the growing importance of stablecoins as a foundational element of internet-based payment systems.

The company’s recent actions demonstrate a clear commitment to this emerging technology. Following a previous investment in BVNK, a stablecoin-based payments firm, Visa has now extended its stablecoin settlement capabilities across the CEMEA region. This expansion builds on Visa’s pioneering role as one of the first major payment networks to process transactions using Circle’s USDC stablecoin. The company’s press release highlights that over $225 million in stablecoin volume has already been settled through its network.

Visa’s confidence in the future of stablecoin technology is evident in the statement by Godfrey Sullivan, Visa’s Senior Vice President and Head of Product and Solution for CEMEA. He predicts that by 2025, every financial institution will require a robust stablecoin strategy to remain competitive.

A crucial element of Visa’s CEMEA expansion is a newly formed strategic partnership with Yellow Card, a prominent African cryptocurrency exchange. This collaboration aims to leverage stablecoins to create innovative cross-border payment solutions. The partnership will focus on streamlining treasury operations and improving liquidity management for participating businesses and individuals.

Chris Maurice, Co-Founder and CEO of Yellow Card, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it represents a significant step toward bridging the gap between traditional finance and the future of money transfer. He emphasized the shared goal of developing more secure, efficient, and transparent payment solutions.

This strategic expansion by Visa underscores the increasing acceptance and integration of stablecoins into the global financial landscape. The partnership with Yellow Card further solidifies Visa’s position as a key player in the evolving digital payment ecosystem, particularly within the rapidly growing African market. The predicted widespread adoption of stablecoin strategies by financial institutions highlights the transformative potential of this technology.
